Voting Question: how do I use a diffuser dryer on curly hair & what styling product should I use?

I have naturl curly hair. I just bought my first hairdryer w/ a diffuser. How do I use it? do I start @ the roots or the ends of my hair? and do I only need to use a frizz cream (and not gel) to get those soft non frizzy poofy curls, to get that Keri Russell look. I've considered using CHI, that looks/feels too oily for me. I've considered using Suaves Matrix frizz cream also. Which would be best? if I flip my head upside down and blow dry, wont that make it really poofy??
